Building upon the success of the Accelerator program, Nike has announced the launch of the 2014 Nike+ Fuel Lab in San Francisco, a 12-week program designed to expand the Nike+ ecosystem by connecting Nike+ and NikeFuel with companies that offer an existing technology product or service.
Facebook just announced its acquisition of SportStream. Although SportStream identifies itself as a "group of die-hard sports fans," the story underneath the acquisition truly represents an API story. Over the past few months, Facebook has been building its developer toolkit with an armory of new APIs and media partners have begun to flock to its new capabilities. The platform underlying SportStream, SportsBase, and its associated API will give Facebook greater visibility into sports-based conversations across the social media ecosystem.
The benefits of a well-designed, well-implemented, easily integated API are well known: happier developers, higher usage and, hopefully, greater profit as a result. While many high-level best practices for developing a great API have been established, a failure to pay close attention to small details, such as parameter defaults, can create big headaches.
