Panelists and presenters at last week's Open Government West 2011 conference in Portland, Oregon tackled the topic of government sponsored app contests. Attendees asserted that not all app contests are designed the same way and there are different benefits and drawbacks with each kind. An overarching issue seemed to be the value returned to the public on government investment in app contests. Governments are looking for the best way to offer services to the public in the face of budget cuts and are eyeing citizen generated apps.
At Mashup Camp last week each attendee was given one wooden nickel with which to vote for their favorite mashup. Then on both days there was a "Speed Geeking" session during which attendees rotated through the Great Hall getting 5 minute demos from each of the 20+ mashup contestants.
#blue is a web service to save text messages in an intelligent, searchable manner. It's a service of O2 UK, and sadly only currently available to O2 UK subscribers. However, it's a rather interesting web service, and it'd be great to see more service providers use a similar service. The fully functional #blue API provides a compliment to its web based service.
