The myriad of online photo album services that are available today have been threatening to make the humble printed photo album redundant for some time now (for example, we now have over 50 photo APIs in our directory). Despite this services like SnapFish, which offer the ability to easily print customized photo books, have remained incredibly popular. Started 10 years ago and still running strong with its new owner HP, SnapFish reportedly has over 85 million users worldwide. Now developers can get in on the action with the newly announced Snapfish Publisher initiative.
Mashup contests can be a good way to reveal the variety of applications that are possible when the developer community is provided with a quality API. At the recent BarCamp London 5, Stefan Magdalinski, CTO of MOO.com, ran a weekend-long MOO API hack competition. The MOO service and API let users submit custom designs that can be printed onto products like business cards, sticker books, postcards, etc. These products can then be sold through an online store.
Search engines such as Google have been making life a lot easier for developers. They have huge development resources that startups just don't have, and when they make their APIs available, everyone benefits. But when it comes to using APIs, especially AJAX APIs, it can be a challenge for developers to use these in a search-friendly way.
