Video conferencing is one of those killer applications that a lot of people get initially excited about, but wind up seldom using. The reason for this ranges from everything from a lack of interoperability standards to the fact that setting up an appointment to walking down the hall to a another room to use a video conferencing system is more trouble than it’s worth, especially when the setting up of that video conferencing session usually requires an administrator or someone from IT to actually set up.
Twilio has really upped the ante with the release of its new iOS SDK for developing voice over IP applications. This means that any iOS App can quite easily add telephony via the Twilio API to its product. By providing an SDK for iOS, Twilio (a ProgrammableWeb sponsor) has lowered the bar for developers wanting to build VOIP applications. It only makes sense for a company that is a pure-play in the API business to do everything possible to encourage adoption among developers, and this release is another is a series of smart moves by Twilo. I expect that this will have a big impact developer adoption and would love to check back in with Twilio to hear how the project goes over the next couple months.

The Vancouver company produces softphones, which allow users to make Internet phone calls (think Skype and Google Voice) from a computer or a mobile device. Although a relatively small player in the market, Counterpath has a respectable 10 million downloads of its client. Its client consists of X-lite, free, and Bria for commercial use.
