Google today said it is putting the Google Places API for iOS 2.0 and the Google Maps SDK for iOS 2.0 into separate CocoaPods. The idea here is to reduce the app size for developers who need Places data, but not Maps data. Google says the change heralds big savings in app binaries.
Five years ago Paul Rademacher reverse engineered Google Maps to put Craigslist homes and rentals on a map on his site. The site essentially pre-launched the map mashup category, because there was no Google Maps API at the time. Now it is the prototypical example and still used by many to find their new homes. And, of course, Google Maps is now by far the most popular API to use.
Geoloqi has added added platform-specific SDKs to its collection of developer tools for real-time location. The SDKs interact with the Geoloqi API and have native tools to improve battery life and simplify common location-based app features. The company hopes the new enhancements will encourage broader use of its platform, which has already found fans in government and enterprise.
