More often than not all it takes to start a revolution is somebody who is angry enough to change the status quo. Ever since the dawn of social media sites the predominant business model has been variations of the walled garden approach to content originally pioneered by America Online (AOL). Today that walled garden approach manifests itself in the form of APIs that have been locked down by social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter.
Twitter today said it plans to adjust access to two of its APIs beginning later this year. The rate limits, which will impact the User Timeline API and Mentions Timeline API, are meant to give Twitter better visibility into how its APIs are being used by developers to support other businesses.
Google has introduced a Web Share API developers can use to enable sharing capabilities on sites. The API allows users to control how and where data is shared by enabling websites to call on the host platform’s native sharing capabilities. The API can only be used on websites with a secure origin.
