Innovation in web service APIs is not always technical, sometimes it's about money. Such is the case with Yahoo's announcement that later this year they will begin charging for usage of BOSS (Build your Own Search Service), their search web service for developers. Given that search revenue is typically ad-driven, and that advertising doesn't typically mesh with APIs, this has meant that search APIs have been one of the most challenging classes of APIs for providers to monetize. So it's notable to see how Yahoo has chosen to tackle this: via a 'utility' pricing model, somewhat akin to how infrastructure services like Amazon Web Services charge by usage.
During the past four months we've seen not one but two well known real-time search engines disappear. First there was OneRiot, which in October 2010 decided to focus on advertising. More recently, Collecta closed it's real-time search engine and API to focus on alternative real-time products. Digging further into real-time search offerings you will also discover that crowdeye has also decided to pull its real-time search engine. This now appears to leave Topsy, and of course Google as the main players focusing on building a real-time search destination. Does this trend signal the end for all real-time search engines or just that their focus has been wrong?
David Engel and Brian Rucker found themselves wondering about mobile versions of websites. The system they built to detect whether mobile sites are displayed for five mobile operating systems is now available as the Company Data Trees Mobile Website Detection API and is the first "branch" of their new venture, Company Data Trees. When Engel and Rucker ran the top 200 sites (according to Alexa), they found about half have no mobile site, including LinkedIn and PayPal.
