A series of conferences known as the Nordic APIs have started a four-day tour of four countries in Northern Europe. The mission: Bringing API discussions to the capitals of Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Norway. Presentations by sponsors MuleSoft (parent company of ProgrammableWeb), Ping Identity, Twilio, Axway and Layer 7 are joined by local speakers in each country under the overarching theme of “Private, Partner and Public APIs.” The first event, held in Stockholm today, was fully booked, with events in Copenhagen and Helsinki also expected to reach audience capacity. Developers at National Day of Civic Hacking Use US Census Bureau API to Create Innovative App and Infographics
Over 11,000 people participated in the first annual National Day of Civic Hacking on June 1st and 2nd, 2013. At the event, developers collaborated with government agencies and entrepreneurs to create applications that help solve civic and social problems impacting local communities. Developers used a variety of public APIs and datasets to create their applications, including the US Census Bureau API, which was used to create an interactive application and several infographics. The US Census Bureau API is the first API created by the US Census Bureau and was released to the public back in July 2012.
Demand for Big Data applications is clearly skyrocketing. But the challenge facing many developers is that the data needed to create those applications exists in structured, unstructured and semi-structured formats. Looking to make it easier to build these kinds of applications, Hewlett-Packard has added support for both a Java SDK and semi-structured data to the HP Vertica columnar database.
