Developers have consumed APIs as a matter of practice for some time now. It's second nature. But the flip side--creating an API--is not performed with the same regularity. To some extent, this is changing as more developers become both consumers and providers of APIs. Below you'll find some tools and services that make the process of creating an API much simpler.
Locu, one of CNN's hot startups to watch, has released an API that exposes Locu's database of business information to third party developers. Locu launched the Locu API at Tech Disrupt SF 2012 and drew immediate attention. The API allows developers to retrieve real-time business data (e.g. venue information, pricelists, menus, etc.) and integrate the data into existing applications. Locu's index crawls the web for business data, and the API makes that data available to other websites and applications.
For music enthusiasts who thrive on insider knowledge and detailed music conversation, WhoSampled would be just their cup of tea. It's basically an online community for discovering and discussing sampled music, remixes and cover songs. WhoSampled has partnered with The Echo Nest to provide the WhoSampled API that allows developers to access and integrate its functionality with other applications.
