This weekend I attended my first ever hacking event: Music Hackday Boston 2011. It was an incredibly exciting, intense experience with plenty of creative inspirational energy. We had ambitious goals which were largely attained, but when it came to the demo, we failed hard. At least, it felt like we did. As I reflected on the demo while we drove home in the black winter night, Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” came to mind. This is the story my personal ring of fire at Music Hackday and how I fell into it.
Sometimes it takes a little human intervention to make semantic applications easier to build. The Guardian newspaper has augmented its Open Platform API with unique identifiers for bands and books. In turn, the company has simplified the process of creating a mashup that uses multiple sources to focus on a single work, which may help its content spread farther.
The legendary Billboard charts are now open for mixing, not by DJs, but by programmers. Billboard, a service of Nielsen Business Media, has a new API that lets developers search and read information from all the Billboard historical charts. The initial offering is its Chart service and later on Billboard will "roll out the Artist and Track services to add even more depth and perspective." the API is a simple REST interface that developers can send HTTP GET requests to in a familiar service/version/resource fashion.
