Factual Inc, a company founded by ex-Googler Gil Elbaz that is creating a collaborative data platform, announced extensions to its Factual APIs today that are aimed at improving the ability to target advertising and provide other geo-based capabilities in mobile applications. The three new APIs, Geopulse, Reverse Geocoder, and World Geographies, fill gaps and extend the scope of Factual’s API portfolio. But the way that Factual thinks about its APIs also holds lessons for anyone who is mapping out an API strategy of their own.
Culture24's SOAP API allows developers to import or query Culture24's events, resources, and venue information such as opening hours and address, among other types of data from their Direct Data Entry Database. Foursquare, the leading location-based social tool, announced a major new initiative last week to expand its location database to include cross-references to corresponding venue listings from other services. As characterized in the announcement post on the company blog, the goal is to make Foursquare the missing "Rosetta Stone for location, allowing you to link information about a real-world place from one database to any other." Now it's not just about using Foursquare, but connecting it to other services.
