Google today said it is putting the Google Places API for iOS 2.0 and the Google Maps SDK for iOS 2.0 into separate CocoaPods. The idea here is to reduce the app size for developers who need Places data, but not Maps data. Google says the change heralds big savings in app binaries.
Yesterday, Yahoo announced its new Internet Location Platform API, "a resource for managing all geo-permanent named places on Earth" that "provide[s] the Yahoo! Geographic Developer Community with the vocabulary and grammar to describe the world's geography in an unequivocal, permanent, and language-neutral manner."
When we search for information on a map we tend to be searching to find where something is now. But, what if you wanted to find out where something used to be? What businesses used to be located at a particular address? Where did somebody used to live? Where did all the blacksmiths used to hang out? AddressingHistory is a recently launched web app and API that provides access to historical data consisting of digitised Scottish post office directories combined with maps from the same time period.
