Amazon Launches Beta Gadgets Skill API

Amazon has launched a beta version of a Gadgets Skill API that allows developers to build game skills for Echo Buttons that work in conjunction with Amazon's Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Show, Echo Plus and Echo Spot devices.

Using the new API via the Alexa Skills Kit, developers can create gaming experiences that respond to button presses in their skills. In response to these button presses, Echo Buttons can illuminate in an animated fashion.

According to Amazon, the Gadgets Skill API is "the first Alexa Gadget in a new category of connected products and developer tools that are focused on fun and playful experiences with Alexa." The retail giant says that it is aiming to offer its customers "a new way for customers to play games with friends and family."

Already, developers who participated in a preview of the new API have built Echo Button games in the trivia, action and choose your own adventure categories. One participant is toy manufacturer Hasbro, which created Simon Tap, a reimagining of its popular Classic Simon.
