Analytics API provider and customer data platform Segment has announced a new API to help businesses comply with the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) rules that go into effect next month in Europe. Under the GDPR, individuals in Europe will have greater control over and access to their personal data. They even have the right to demand that companies delete their personal information and companies must comply within 30 days.
Using Segment's new API, companies will be able to issue data deletion requests for specified users. For raw data destinations, such as Amazon S3 and Google BigQuery, data will be deleted using those destinations' own API integrations. For requests directed at third-party providers like Amplitude, Itercom and Iterable, Segment's new API will forward the requests to those providers for processing.
The new API also allows companies using Segment to supress data collection from specific users.
According to Segment, "we want to help as much as we can. These new features, along with our existing functionality, enable [customers] to facilitate the key end-user rights requests under the GDPR."
