Online stock and options brokerTradeKing, has just announced the results of its $100K Campus Challenge for students to use its TradeKing API. The API lets developers build applications to manage trading activity, access to market data and account management. The company challenged business students to create uniquely new web and mobile applications.
A total of 29 teams of undergraduate college students participated in the Challenge that ran for a good 4 months from September. Top honors in the contest went to the “Stock Bros” team from Jeffrey S. Raikes School of Computer Science and Management at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. The team took $58K of the prizes, according to Silicon Prairie News, which also posted this photo of the happy group.
The “Stock Bros” application makes it easier to trade via TradeKing from any location. To achieve this it provided the users with a Chrome Browser extension and an Android mobile application. The Chrome Browser extension was quite cool in the seamless way in which it scans through Stock Symbols on a web page, appends a stock quote and allows the user to view the stock price and other detailed charts via a Yahoo Finance API Mashup. It goes one step further by allowing the stock ticker to be added directly into your TradeKing Account watch list and even do a trade. Android Cloud to Device Messaging was used to even send back push notifications to your Android device directly via the Chrome Browser extension.
The “Stock Bros” team captain Chris Johnson added that the application was a real one and they did as part of their finance class grade. Ultimately the competitive nature of the event made them push the envelope in terms of the features they implemented in the application.
In addition to the national winner, more than half-dozen other winners were also acknowledged at the schools and divisional level. There were special prizes for faculty members and schools that supported the challenge. The winning applications will soon be featured in the TradeKing gallery.
