Apple has announced several updates to its App Store Review Guidelines that portend forthcoming changes to the platform. These guidelines include mention of a new App Tracking Transparency feature which has been long rumored as an attempt to improve platform privacy.
This new privacy feature will require applications to receive explicit authorization before collecting tracking data regarding a user’s habits across other apps and websites. Users will be able to view which applications are collecting this data in a new section of the iPhone settings page.
Thanks to the newly published platform guidelines we now know that this functionality will be powered by an App Tracking Transparency API, with the announcement noting that:
“You must receive explicit permission from users via the App Tracking Transparency APIs to track their activity.”
