Asos Fashion Catalogue: The API Makes the App

The RESTful Asos API (with JSON responses only) from UK-based Asos integrates access to a massive fashion catalog with over 50,000 product lines growing at 1,500 lines a week, in womenswear, menswear, footwear, accessories and beauty.

Although the API is free, it  limits calls to 200 per day. Prior approval of your development is required, to protect the Asos brand. Asos may need all the protection it can get. Amazon just announced plans to compete directly, according to Graham Ruddick of The Telegraph,

Christopher North, managing director of, said: "More and more customers are discovering the benefits of shopping for clothing online and we are rapidly expanding our fashion offering with a raft of aspirational brands and on-trend products.

"The new premium store is a prime example of that, giving customers a dedicated destination for top designer brands like 7 For All Mankind, Pringle, and Hudson."

Amazon had entertained the idea of buying Asos but decided to strike out on its own. Meanwhile, Asos has bought a 30% stake in an Irish firm, Covetique, a site that lets its customers sell their high end clothes second hand in ebay-like fashion.
