Coronavirus Increases Demand on Chat Apps; Outages Ensue

Discord, a popular chat service, reported widespread outages early this week. Discord indicated that the outage was related to servers being "completely unavailable." By late in the day Monday, the Discord status page showed "All Systems Operational."

Outages are never welcome, but this particular outage was especially untimely. Less than an hour before the outage, the Discord team tweeted:

"We increased capacity worldwide by more than 20% to ensure that you're able to text, video, & voice chat smoothly."

Discord increased capacity in specific response to the social distancing practices being encouraged as a result of the Coronavirus (COVID-19). Discord wasn't the only chat app with pandemic related challenges. Microsoft also reported outages for its Teams service.

Web services are in high demand and will continue to be as individuals around the globe isolate themselves to avoid the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19). Expect to see web services companies enhance their infrastructure in the coming days and weeks. But, also expect more outages as the tech world adjusts to the current situation.
