DigitalGlobe Launches New Maps API and Developer Site

DigitalGlobe, a leading high-resolution Earth imagery products and advanced geospatial services provider, has announced the launch of a brand-new DigitalGlobe Maps API (beta version) and developer website. The DigitalGlobe Maps APITrack this API provides access to high-resolution Earth imagery, interactive maps, static maps and other geospatial content.

DigitalGlobe was founded in the early 1990s and, according to the company's website, it now owns the largest constellation of high-resolution Earth imaging satellites in the industry. The daily image capacity of DigitalGlobe satellites combined is over 3 million square kilometers, and the company can deliver earth imagery in 30 cm resolution for most locations worldwide.

The DigitalGlobe Maps API allows developers to add interactive maps, static maps, high-resolution satellite imagery, stylized GIS-ready basemaps and other geospatial content to their applications. DigitalGlobe has partnered with Mapbox to distribute its content and provide the ability to add labels and data overlays to DigitalGlobe imagery. Mapbox infrastructure also makes it possible for developers to choose from custom imagery compression settings. This reduces the average size of the map tiles, which greatly increases the speed of DigitalGlobe imagery.

“The launch of DigitalGlobe Maps API and our new Developer Portal is the culmination of a series of strategic investments and partnerships that focus on allowing our customers to build our imagery, maps, and analytics into their applications and customer solutions," DigitalGlobe CEO Jeffrey R. Tarr said in a press release. “By streamlining access to our industry-leading content and enabling subscription services like Maps API, we are positioned to unlock a large and vibrant new customer base and expand our location-based services business."

The DigitalGlobe Maps API is in beta, and developers interested in using the API can request access using the contact form on the developer site.
