Google has announced that its neural machine translation system is now generally available via the Google Cloud Translation API. The company also announced that neural machine translation now supports seven new languages including English to and from Russian, Polish, Hebrew, and Arabic. This past September, Google published a research paper about its Google Neural Machine Translation system (GNMT) and how the system uses Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) to help overcome many of the weaknesses of traditional phrase-based translation systems. Google also announced in September that the GNMT system has been moved to production for Chinese to English, a very difficult language pair.
The Google Cloud Translation API uses Neural Machine Translation (NMT) to translate strings of text to and from supported languages. Developers can use the Google Cloud Translation API to add translation capabilities to websites and mobile applications. The Google Cloud Translation API is RESTful and can automatically detect languages used and translate them. Google recently added NMT features to the Google Cloud Translation API. The NMT model currently supports 15 languages eight of which were just added. The API supports more than one hundred languages using the Phrase-Based Machine Translation (PBMT) model.
Google has announced that its NMT system is now generally available to all customers through the Standard Edition of the Google Cloud Translation API. Neural machine translation features were previously available through a beta Premium Edition of the Google Cloud Translation API. The Standard Edition of the Google Cloud Translation API now uses both PBMT and NMT models for language translation. Google has announced the addition of seven new languages to neural machine translation including English to and from Arabic, Hebrew, Hindi, Polish, Russian, Thai, and Vietnamese. NMT now supports a total of 15 languages. Google plans on adding more languages to NMT in coming weeks.
Google Cloud Translation API Standard Edition customers who are already paying the list online price can access NMT at no additional charge. For more information about the Google Cloud Translation API, view the Google Cloud Platform documentation.
