GuideStar, the world's largest source of information about nonprofit organizations, has recently announced significant upgrades to two of its APIs. The company’s EssentialsTrack this API and Premier APIsTrack this API have received new capabilities that range from filtering nonprofits based on their standing with the US IRS, to demographic data that nonprofits have shared about their boards.
In addition to being able to filter nonprofits based on their IRS status, the Essentials API can now retrieve nonprofit logos, provide specific nonprofit designations (e.g., 501(c)(3) public charities or private nonoperating foundations), and take advantage of an upgraded infrastructure that aims to increase efficiency.
In contrast, the more expensive GuideStar Premier API, received updates that are much more powerful. Users can now retrieve more detailed financial information including 990-EZ financials, net assets, net fixed assets, and mortgage data. The API will now also provide financial health metrics, a summary of individual nonprofits’ financial health over five years. Additionally the API provides forward looking financial trends data which provides, “a snapshot of key financial trends and ratios for individual nonprofits”.
