Marriott's API Platform Revolutionized Their Mobile Approach

Hotel giant Marriott was recently honored with the International Data Group's 2015 CIO 100 award. The annual awards ceremony recognizes 100 organizations that distinguish themselves by driving business value through the use of innovative technology. Specifically, Marriott was chosen for its API Platform. Marriott's API offers a centralized method through which the company collects, distributes and delivers data and applications.

"The API Platform has truly revolutionized how we approach mobile applications, how we deliver data, and how we can best deliver consistent and relevant experiences for our guests," Bruce Hoffmeister, Marriott's global chief information officer, said in a press release. "We are honored that our efforts have been recognized by CIO magazine."

Marriott launched its API Platform in 2014. The platform includes a core app infrastructure, app development tools and a catalog of APIs. The platform streamlines decision-making from an IT perspective. Since the launch, mobile release delivery time shrunk from six months to six weeks. As with any new offering, the end goal of Marriott's API Platform aims to provide an improved guest experience. The new guest experience includes a seamless, technology-driven engagement.

Driven by the Marriott API, Marriott launched a new app that allows Marriott Rewards members to check in/check out, receive room ready alerts, review reservations and receive directions to the hotel on an Apple Watch. Further, the new Mobile Requests offering enables guests to order services and amenities from personal mobile devices. To date, Marriott says millions of guests have utilized the mobile check-in feature. Regardless of industry or traditional business model, APIs continue to deliver value to API consumers, partners and end users.
