Planet Labs Introduces API for Satellite Imagery Services

Planet Labs Inc., a provider of high-resolution imaging solutions via their SkySat satellite constellation, has announced plans to release a cloud-based dashboard and accompanying API. Partnering companies will be able to use the new tools to automate satellite imaging task requests.

Planet mentioned the new API and dashboard alongside the announcement of plans to lower the altitude of satellites in their constellation. Combined, these two efforts will provide users with higher resolution imagery and a streamlined method for handling requests. The company noted in an interview with that:

“Instead of spending precious time going back and forth with a human [representative], with the tasking dashboard and API, customers can autonomously submit, modify, and cancel SkySat imagery requests. This enables visibility into the end-to-end experience, from order to fulfillment, so expectations can be managed with analysts and teams.”

These enhancements via API seem especially timely as the company moves to launch more satellites and further expand their services.
