2016 was a big year for APIs and a busy year for us here at ProgrammableWeb. In addition to focusing on delivering daily API news, we beefed up our API University, a repository of API training materials, lessons, tutorials, how-to's and analyses for API providers, developers & executives.
Meanwhile, our editorial, development, database and site administration teams updated our directory data model to keep pace with the API Economy.
Finally, our group of API researchers, together with our large community of API enthusiasts, have managed to add over 2,000 APIs, 3,200 SDKs, 1,000 code samples, as well as plenty of frameworks, mashups and libraries to the largest API directory on Earth.
But this article is all about focusing on this year's most interesting APIs. We wanted to remind readers about noteworthy APIs released during 2016, as well as point out some standout APIs that our readers may have missed.
Our methodology for choosing the APIs in this story involved a combination of interest shown by website traffic, social media buzz (such as Twitter clicks and retweets), hot categories (see chart below), insights from our crack team of API researchers, and a dartboard. We've amassed a fairly large list of APIs (over 100!), so we have divided it up into the following sections for readability: Application Development & Developer Tools, Big Data & Data Analytics, Business & Productivity, Cognitive Computing, Entertainment, Lifestyle, & Education, Finance & Banking, Health & Environment, Mapping & Location, Security & Privacy.
As much as we love the APIs we've included here, we know there is no way to include all the exceptional technology developers have worked on this year. We encourage readers to add their favorites in the article comments or Tweet them to us @ProgrammableWeb and we'll retweet them.
