Sickweather, real-time illness map developer, recently announced its cognitive API. Sickweatherapps provide disease surveillance through "sick zone alerts" pushed to mobile devices. The traditional healthcare ecosystem relies on data collection from hospitals, clinics and public health agencies to track the spread of contagious illness (a multi-week process). Sickweather utilizes social media to gather data directly from patients and their social circles for real-time reporting.
"Once we know where all the data is coming from, it can be geo-tagged or geo-located to a city or town, and even specific areas in cities and towns where contagion exists," Sickweather CEO, Graham Dodge, commented in a Real-Time Daily report. "And we can geo-fence the data and then the phone knows where the problem or outbreak is."
API access to the Sickweather platform allows healthcare providers and other third parties to better understand real-time healthcare trend developments. Integration with such parties could increase both the data input footprint for the Sickweather platform, and the use case scenarios for those acting upon Sickweather data. Sickweather initialy partnered with Swaive (Smart Thermometer app), Johnson & Johnson (Healthy Day app), and AccuWeather (StoryTeller Health broadcast) to expand its reach beyond individuals with the API.
"Our goal is to get more healthcare companies and other entities to plug in Sickweather to understand where real-time sickness trends are," Dodge continued. "It could help them do pre-diagnoses, and they can also share real-time data in a global database."
Sickweather processes over 6 million illness reports each month. Sickweather's machine learning technology patrols social media for comments such as "I'm sick" or "my son is sick" to aggregate illness data.
