Pubnub Snags $11 M to Beef Up API-based Real-Time Services Network
Messaging and social services API provider Pubnub has raised $11 million in series B funding from Scale Venture Partners. The idea is to build out its real-time APIs to facilitate publishers' creation of real-time APIs.
As Ingrid Lunden explains in Techcrunch, Pubnub's goal is to shoulder the burden of creating real-time services so its clients can save on development:
The idea behind PubNub is that building these out as standalone services can be capital intensive for publishers, so offering them via API becomes a more cost-effective way of implementing them. “Open source and commercial solutions, like Firebase and Pusher, only focus on the challenges of developing real-time. But 75% of the pain is deploying and Scaling real-time apps. Only PubNub provides a global real-time network for deploying real-time apps worldwide as well as developing them,” Todd Greene, CEO and founder of PubNub says. He adds that the company is planning to expand those offerings in the coming weeks.
Already popular, Pubnub powers thousands of apps worldwide and streams 3 million messages per second. As Lundgren points out, the field is crowded, with giants like Twilio and new comers like Layer. With the total raised by Pubnub at $15.5 million, it will be a horse race to watch these companies grow toward and maintain a secure position.
