Today in APIs: USDA Launches Seven New APIs, and 10 New APIs

The USDA has launched seven new APIs through its Economic Research Service (ERS). On the heals of the Firefox 26 release, Mozilla has added Firefox 27 to its Beta Channel. Plus: 10 ways your ecommerce business can use APIs and 10 new APIs.

The USDA Launches New APIs

The USDA has increased its API offering available through ERS. To meet the demand of a growing developer and researcher community, the USDA has released seven new APIs that provide access to data from the USDA and other Federal agencies. The new APIs include data from the ARMS Farm Financial and Crop Production Practices, the Food Dollar Series, the Food Access Research Atlas, the Food Environment Atlas, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Data System, the Farm Program Atlas, and the Atlas of Rural and Small-Town America.

Erin Maneri Akred, Presidential Innovations Fellow for Open Data, ERS, wrote:

"Data queries/functionality in the APIs match those of the data products, applications, and atlases already offered.  This increases the value and utility of public data, and enables greater interaction with ERS data in machine-readable formats, such as mashing up with other data sets and/or processing for new insights. ERS is committed to expanding and enriching accessibility and transparency via Open Data strategies."

Mozilla Adds Simultaneous Social API Notifications to Firefox 27

Mozilla just launched Firefox 26. Just a few days afterward, Mozilla added Firefox 27 to the Beta Channel. Firefox 27 includes updates to the Social API. The update allows multiple Integration partners to send notifications at the same time. Prior to this update, users were limited to notifications from the social provider indicated in the Firefox toolbar.
