Walgreens Refill API Has Possibilities
As covered yesterday by our own Eric Carter, Walgreens has released its refill API for mobile developers,
"As Walgreens’ Abhi Dhar suggested, consumers have become more and more dependent on mobile devices for day to day living. If Walgreens can leverage such behavior to improve general wellness and lower hospital admission rates, it will drive positive change throughout the world. Walgreens currently sits as the largest Pharmacy in the US and should continue to encourage healthy living by promoting innovation in its industry."
Writing in StorefrontBacktalk, Frank Hayes points out that improvements are needed. All the API does at the moment is take a prescription number and then report back on whether it was successfully filled. Despite being "primitive", this could be the beginning of something more sophisticated, he says.
"For example, using the API, Walgreens could cleanly add the ability for apps to get more useful information, such as: an estimated time the refill will be ready; the price; whether there’s a brand name that could be substituted if the pharmacy is out of the generic; or whether there’s another nearby store that could refill it sooner if the original store is currently out of the medication."
As Hayes notes, there's a risk here for Walgreens--mobile APIs could make it easier for customers to comparison shop.
Facebook Starts Video Channel for Developers
Facebook announced that it has started a new video channel, Facebook Developers Live,
"a new way for developers to stay up to date on the latest news, tutorials, speaking sessions and more via Facebook Developers Live. Developers Live is a curated video channel that features live, recorded and interactive broadcasts, giving developers a central place to learn about the latest tools and to get access to the product managers and engineers who created them."
Developers Live will feature three types of content: mobile app development with Facebook, building better games for web and mobile, and driving traffic with Facebook/
