This week, customer engagement company Urban Airship released a beta SDK for iOS in advance of the public release of iOS 12. The SDK offers full support for Grouped Notifications, Critical Alerts and Provisional Authorization, three new features that are meant to give users more granular control over the notifications they receive on their devices.
In iOS 12 Grouped Notifications will be used as a way of condensing the display of an app’s notifications, both on the lockscreen and in the notification center. For example if your phone had received notifications from both Twitter and Facebook, they would be grouped by app instead of chronologically. .
Critcal Alerts is a new feature in iOS 12 that allows for loud, disruptive notifications that bypass the Do Not Disturb setting and the ringer switch. It is intended for medical or health apps, security apps or public safety notices. Such alerts will require previous approval from Apple.
Lastly, Provisional Authorizations allow apps to send alerts to the Notification Center without making a sound. This allows users to then decide if they want those notifications to be delivered more prominently.
