One of the key benefits that the cloud brings to developers is the promise of reducing the cost of hosting applications. "Pay per use" is mentioned by every cloud vendor, but that by itself is not a magic wand by which the bills get reduced. A typical pattern is to observe monthly bills, see which services ended up being costly, then look at re-architecting bits and pieces of the application. Google Cloud Platform, which is fast becoming a strong alternative to Amazon Web Services, wants to make the task easier by providing a billing API that provides programmatic access to your daily Google Cloud Platform usage and cost estimates.
MachineShop plans to deliver a service that normalizes all the data being collected across the Internet of Things (IoT). The MachineShop service, formally launched today with $3 million in funding, normalizes data formats across a wide range of APIs. It connects devices in a way that provides access to a common set of business logic, event management and communications services that MachineShop manages.
Microsoft recently announced Open Service Mesh (OSM). OSM is a lightweight and extensible cloud native service mesh. OSM runs on Kubernetes and was built for that community. OSM is an open source project and Microsoft has already proposed to donate OSM to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation.
