The Geocodio Geocoding PHP Sample Code demonstrates how to convert one or more addresses into geographic coordinates. Developers can geocode a single address at a time or collect multiple addresses in batches to geocode up to 10,000 addresses at the time.
There's a new way to get thousands of local points of interest into your web maps: the CloudMade Data Market Place. There's a fee for using the data, but otherwise it's as easy as the standard CloudMade API (our CloudMade API profile). For a few hundred dollars per year, you can add any restaurant in the U.S., hospitals in the UK to your map, or one of about 80 datasets.
Zillow has released an application for iPhone users that builds on their Zillow API, the Microsoft Virtual Earth API and the iPhone's GPS capabilities. The Zillow iPhone app detects your location and shows data about nearby homes, including market values, photos, and which ones are for sale. It's a great example of a mobile mashup application that uses multiple APIs in meaningful location-aware context.
Changes to an API Terms of Service (TOS) are an inevitable part of API operations, and as API owners work to evolve their APIs, changes can often be at odds with the community. As some API seem to struggle with the best way to update, Google's approach appears to be more balanced. Google just updated its TOS for Google Earth and its popular Google Maps API.
