When it comes to the rabidly popular FourSquare, which launched in March, developers have been clamoring to build on top of the service. So, today's launch of the FourSquare API (our FourSquare API profile) is bound to be met with extreme enthusiasm.
Factual Inc, a company founded by ex-Googler Gil Elbaz that is creating a collaborative data platform, announced extensions to its Factual APIs today that are aimed at improving the ability to target advertising and provide other geo-based capabilities in mobile applications. The three new APIs, Geopulse, Reverse Geocoder, and World Geographies, fill gaps and extend the scope of Factual’s API portfolio. But the way that Factual thinks about its APIs also holds lessons for anyone who is mapping out an API strategy of their own.
A year ago users of Garmin's sport tracking devices logged into its Garmin Connect site to find a seemingly minor change. Instead of embedding Google Maps, the GPS manufacturer had switched to Microsoft's Bing Maps. According to the 38 pages of comments in Garmin's forums, this was in actuality a major change. A year later, Garmin responded in October by giving users the option of Bing or Google.
