The New York City Government has raised the bar for open government programs everywhere by launching several brand new NYC Open Data APIs, a redesigned Open Data Portal and Developer Website. The NYC Open Data Portal now has over 1,100 datasets available including 200 brand new datasets that have just been added.
The movement to enable ordinary citizens, aided by civic-minded programmers, to plumb the depths of government data continues today with the launch of the Apps for Californians Contest. This new mashup competition from the State of California is intended to further the goals of transparency and access.
So far more than 650 APIs have been added to the ProgrammableWeb directory in 2014 and some new trends are starting to emerge. Some recent popular categories remain near the top of the charts. The financial APIs that put APIs in the mainstream continue to expand, adding about 50 new APIs in the first quarter. A few other categories were less consistent and had extreme rises or falls in popularity.
