Normally we'd give a brand new site a break for not immediately having an API. When it comes to the rabidly popular FourSquare, which launched in March, developers have been clamoring to build on top of the service. So, today's launch of the FourSquare API (our FourSquare API profile) is bound to be met with extreme enthusiasm.
Very little has been happening on the GM API front lately beyond plans for connected cars announced in January. But that quiet period could signal the retooling before the storm. Programmableweb's Janet Wagner wrote a three-part series earlier in June, making it clear that changes are coming from every auto manufacturer. One indication: our API directory lists 17 APIs under "vehicle." The GM APIs cover features everyone would expect, from audio streaming to location data. But GM's plans extend far beyond that.
It used to be you could change anything layered on top of a map, but you couldn't change the underlying map itself. Now you have several options for changing the color palette and the visibility of different objects that make up your base map. The options vary on the amount you can customize and how much work is required. But all three of these APIs can have you map scripting with style.
