Forecast, the team that created the acclaimed iOS weather app Dark Sky, has created an API that brings its gorgeous weather data and display into any platform. As Forecast put it, they wanted to transcend their work with Dark Sky.
Google has now made its closely-guarded Google Places API available to all developers, after nearly a year in closed beta. The API, first announced a year ago, returns business listings based on location. The search giant also added features that make the service useful for many types of local applications, in addition to simplifying the authentication process. With additional agreements, Google also allows for a healthy 100,000 queries, versus only 1,000 standard calls.
Two of the biggest brands in local search are partnering and they're using open APIs to do it. Citysearch is including sponsored ads from YP.com (Yellow Pages) in its CityGrid ad network (our CityGrid API profile). Additionally, Citysearch reviews show up across the YP.com website.
