Apple iOS 8 opens new areas of iOS and enables developers to extend the content and functionality of their applications. Developers can create customized experiences in the realms of photo editing, sharing, notifications, keyboard, documents, and actions. There are over 4,000 new APIs enabling new capabilities and features. Some of the major new APIs, which cover gaming, photo tools, health/fitness, the cloud, home automation, etc., include Metal, SceneKit, SpriteKit, CloudKit, HomeKit, HealthKit, Camera, PhotoKit, Swift, and TouchID.
Within most enterprise IT organizations there is a tension between classic approaches to middleware based on software-oriented architectures (SOA) and approaches based on APIs that are easier to build and deploy but potentially more difficult to manage.
Load testing service Load Impact has released a Google Chrome extension to let API developers record API engagement direct from the browser. API developers can then run these recorded use cases through a variety of load testing scenarios to ensure reliable API access ahead of any plans to scale API delivery. Load Impact CTO Robin Gustafsson spoke with ProgrammableWeb about the new service feature.
