During the first few days of this December, over 1,000 civic technologists collaborated around the world during the Sanitation Hackathon. The Hackathon's mission was simple in words, but immense in potential impact: "to tackle leading sanitation challenges." Teams of developers joined to tackle various problem statements that threaten basic livelihood across the globe. Problem statements fell into one or more of seven categories (i.e. governance, handwashing, open defecation, rural, toilets, urban, and waste water).
We are seeing APIs appear in just about every industry this year, from finance to green tech to health care. One industry that clearly seen the value of APIs is the U.S. medical marijuana industry, recognizing thatAPIs can provide the seeds for entirely new strains of business models and applications to grow (pun intended). As more states are legalizing medical marijuana, there has been a subsequent wave of APIs being launched to support the industry and developers who are working to build apps for both patients and growers.
Affectiva has announced that its new Emotion API for Speech (beta) is now available to beta users. The API analyzes recorded speech identifying emotion events and gender. An initial set of metrics is now available and includes metrics such as laughing, anger, irritation, and hostility.
