Although you may not realize it on the surface, DevHub, the free site builder and hosting platform, is effectively a very sophisticated mashup using over 40 different external APIs. The Seattle-based startup, now with 10,000 site publishers who've built over 100,000 sites, have recently launched a major upgrade with new site editing tools, more content (API) partners, and new monetization tools. In this first of a series of articles about encouraging API adoption, I talked with Blair Beckwith, Developer Advocate and App Store Lead from Shopify. Shopify is an e-commerce platform for selling just about anything you can think of from 50 Cent's headphone collection to fancy, leather laptop bags. There are two kinds of "developer" on Shopify: 1) those who create templates that dictate the look and feel of a site, and 2) those who create add-ons that are available in the shopkeeper add-on store. In this article, I'm going to concentrate on the second one, the add-on developers.
Groupon, which calls itself a "social commerce site," is one of many online services that help consumers pool their buying power to get great deals. However, few companies can share Groupon's experience of attracting $135 million dollars from the same venture capital funds that helped grow Facebook and Zynga. To help third-party developers and affiliate members get the word out about its daily specials, Groupon has released a publicly available API.
