SAP has more than 1,500 applications and services, and with the emergence of SAP HANA as an in-memory computing platform, the company plans to expand its application portfolio even more. The challenge is figuring out how to make it easier for developers to integrate all those applications.
There are major advantages to today’s applications being built atop APIs. If you’re reading ProgrammableWeb, there’s a good chance you know all about integrating with other services. The major disadvantage of modern distributed architecture is pretty obvious—someone else’s service could go down and it’s outside of your control. You might not even know a service is down, which is why many top API providers are now making status pages available. These sites help communicate to developers when anything is amiss with the API.
IBM has announced that it is acquiring the digital and data assets of The Weather Company in a deal reportedly worth more than $2 billion. The acquisition will hing on IBM's ability to create value by applying Watson to The Weather Company's data to create predictive weather analytics solutions.
