SXSW was the source of a flood of real-time information on the web. Information flowed from attendees using social media tools to share what was being discussed, their thoughts and their experiences. This information was amplified further by the information be re-shared (retweeted on Twitter) and by other opinions being expressed about all things SXSW. But how is it that you ensure you don't miss an important piece of information from within your social media connections or even outside of your normal social media circles? From an earlier post on Cadmus, an algorithmic Twitter feed service, you may be aware of the idea of curation - filtering content to ensure that you don't miss the most relevant information. But who performs this curation and what roles do technology have in the process?
In January, OnStar announced an API would allow third party developers to integrate their applications with OnStar's platform. Last week, General Motors announced its first partner for API integration: RelayRides. RelayRides is "[t]he world's largest peer to peer carsharing marketplace." The partnership with GM allows OnStar users to leave their keys in their cars when renting a car to a fellow RelayRider. The renter can then unlock the car with a smartphone app or by responding to a text message.
Jinni, television and movie taste engine, has expanded its API to include a feature that discovers movies and shows that more than one viewer will enjoy: Watch Together. The Watch Together feature expands the discovery engine API to include social functionality (e.g. makes recommendations based on the tastes of multiple, disparate tastes). Based on multiple profiles of a group that would like to watch a show together, Watch Together makes a recommendation.
