From lights and switches to people and cars, SmartThings aims at communicating with everyday devices through a smartphone. With the availability of the SmartThings API, developers can add similar functionality with third party applications to create a more automated world. Although SmartThings strongly believes in the power of smart and mobile devices, it believes the inherent intelligence of smart devices will remain limited. Accordingly, SmartThings exists to transfer the “intelligence” of such devices to the application layer, and away from the physical device itself.
During the first few days of this December, over 1,000 civic technologists collaborated around the world during the Sanitation Hackathon. The Hackathon's mission was simple in words, but immense in potential impact: "to tackle leading sanitation challenges." Teams of developers joined to tackle various problem statements that threaten basic livelihood across the globe. Problem statements fell into one or more of seven categories (i.e. governance, handwashing, open defecation, rural, toilets, urban, and waste water).
Today, BMC announced the general availability of its Innovation Suite for Developers. The Suite of tools is designed to enable businesses to offer services for the digital and cloud era. The APIs and SDKs that power the Suite can be leveraged by process owners and developers alike.
