With the upcoming release of the new iPhone 5S, mobile health applications and quantified self capacities take another leap forward. Developers will have a new CoreMotion API through which they can access a stream of personal health and sensor tracking data from a smartphone, even while the iPhone is at rest.
Mercedes-Benz has unveiled an experimental Connected Vehicles API for developers, the first for the Daimler-owned automaker. Through the API, developers can have access to telematics data, such as a vehicle's location, tire pressure and fuel levels, as well as a variety of vehicle data.
As API use continues to broaden, it’s conceivable that APIs will soon evolve into a conduit for sharing information that will expand far beyond application software. Speaking at the APIcon 2014 conference today, author and freelance developer Keith Axline expounded on a theory that he initially explored in an article that first appeared in Wired, titled “The Universe Is Programmable. We Need an API for Everything.”
