This SDK is a directions plugin for mapbox-gl-js using the Mapbox Directions API. It provides a way to quickly add UI to display driving, cycling, or walking directions on the map. The Mapbox Directions API is powered by the OSRM routing engine and open data from the OpenStreetMap project. Some features include; calculate optimal driving, walking, and cycling routes, produce turn-by-turn instructions and produce routes with up to 25 coordinates anywhere on earth. Mapbox is an open source mapping platform for developers.
The New York Times made news earlier this year through its release of several APIs (our Campaign Finance API Profile and our Movie Reviews API Profile). There's been promise of more APIs to come, and the latest prototype created by The New York Times gives a preview of what is to come.
Online mapping pioneer MapQuest is using open data to provide transit directions via its MapQuest Directions API and the OpenStreetMap-based MapQuest Open Directions API. In both cases, transit directions are based on the Google-created GTFS data standard that helps transit agencies share their routes, schedules and fares in a consistent format. Currently MapQuest's support is limited to six U.S. metro areas.
