MapQuest is a location-enabled Geospatial solution that provides tools for mapping items such as reservations, recommendations to routes, reroutes and more.
MapQuest launched another site on top of OpenStreetMap, this time for the United States. With it, came an opportunity to have your directions written in "Santa Speak," something that is also available in MapQuest's Open Directions API, along with several other languages. The new site is MapQuest's largest built with data from the "free wiki world map" and consumes at least one API itself, for showing bugs in OpenStreetMap's database.
Mass transit in metropolitan regions is becoming an increasingly popular mode of transportation for commuters faced with ever-increasing oil prices. As a result, there is an emerging need for mass transit agencies to make information more accessible to a growing number of commuters. What role can APIs play?
The Earthquake Data Portal API provides event information in both SOAP and REST-style services. For SOAP, the information is provided in QuakeML format. For REST, information is in either QuakeML or JSON formats. Users can do Event Searches, review Latest Events and look at Event Details. Data on seismic waveforms and their velocity are also provided, including the ability to predict arrival times and locations after they have been detected. The API will identify the data providers within the Seismolink network.
