BlindSquare founder, Ilkka Pirttimaa, once browsed over Wikipedia's Augmented Reality article and realized the concept focused solely on vision. Pirttimma believed the concept could expand to audio; thus, the idea for BlindSquare was born. The BlindSquare app provides "a new solution that combines the latest technology to help the daily life of the blind." BlindSquare pulls data from the FourSquare API and alerts users of restaurants, stores, and other locations surrounding them via audio instructions.
Map mashups continue to mature in terms of sophistication and functionality, providing end users with an ever-expanding set of tools and applications. As a result, the intersection between traditional geospatial data and these new mashups requires well defined ways to transfer, distribute, and consume geospatial data in a web-friendly way.
Geo APIs are popular in today's mobile, ever-connected world. It's hard to find an oft-used app without mapping functionality of some sort. While the likes of Google Maps and other services have popular APIs, there is a visible lack of standardization in geocoding that the OGC seeks to remedy.
