Civic Commons, a non-profit initiative that aims to help cities and local governments harness the power of shared technologies and adapt to a more collaborative software development methodology, recently released an app store for civic technology called the Civic Commons Marketplace. Just last week, an alpha version of the Civic Commons Marketplace API for this app store was also released.
Moonshadow Mobile is making US Census data available on a high performance platform. They have taken the data and geocoded it for Google and Bing maps. The service offering is a proprietary, patent pending system that is able to search through between 20 and 100 million census data records in under a second. Moonshadow has the full census data set, even down to individual voter registration records which only be released to office holders or government entities. The Moonshadow Mobile API offers developers access to a subset of this data.
Chicago commuters just got a new resource that may lead to more helpful mashups: the Chicago Transit Authority Bus Tracker API. As recently announced, the API provides capability for developers to get bus routes and schedules, bus stop and arrival predictions, and more. Note that the API is not affiliated with the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA); rather, it was developed and is maintained by Harper Reed, who says the CTA has been "amazingly cool with all of this."
