Navionics announced a new web mapping API in Java to bring its navigation charts and other content to developers. The Navionics API is free, and is not to be incorporated in a fee-based website at this point. Of the three tiers for pricing, silver, gold and platinum, the API does not access the top of the line product. Languages supported are English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. A sign up is required to access the API's technical information.
In less than sixty days since the private beta release of its API, Portland-based Shizzow has now released its API (our Shizzow API Profile) to the public. If you are not familiar with Shizzow, it is a location-based social service that a small, yet dedicated, team of techies built with the goal of helping you build quality relationships through face-to-face interaction. Sharing some similarity with Yahoo!'s Fire Eagle and other location based services, Shizzow functions as a geo-location service that allows users to send "shouts" out of their location, which are subsequently passed on to friends through updates in several mediums. Originally limited for use by Portlanders, Shizzow recently went public in conjunction with the public release of their API.
Those worried about whether the internet will kill the local retailers have either a positive sign or another reason to worry. Location-based shopping company Retailigence has announced its first round of developer applications. The apps use the Retailigence API to look for products in stock at local stores, by either keyword or barcode. Brick and mortar retailers have long feared similar technology, which could be used to find a better deal online, where there are not the same real estate costs. Retailigence hope to flip that for local retailers, making it easy for consumers to shop locally.
