Organizations are continuously engaged in mining the large amounts of information that is generated daily on social networks. As is natural, they would like to understand trends and any mentions in real time. Topsy, a realtime search engine has been indexing Twitter data on a daily basis and providing the Topsy API, to sift through that information. It has now added another feather in its cap by adding public Google Plus posts to its index.
On Tuesday, social media giant Twitter announced that it is buying Data as a Service (DaaS) provider Gnip for an undisclosed amount. Gnip, which is one of several companies that sell access to the firehose of the content posted on Twitter, was founded in 2008 and today offers data from a number of popular user-generated services in addition to Twitter.
In this post I'll describe how we planned, built and tested a truly real-time location-based game with Socket.io, Redis, Node.js, and what we learned along the way. Over the past few months, we've spent the majority our free time building a real-time game as a test for our location platform, Geoloqi. We call the game MapAttack! due to its map-based nature. Two teams compete to capture the most points on the gameboard. The gameboard, in this case, is the city streets of the neighborhood the players are in.
