Open APIs are upending the ecommerce business model and forcing developers to seek out more realtime tools to ensure a positive customer experience. Speaking with ProgrammableWeb at the recent API World conference in San Francisco, Tony*, a lead developer with an online retailer, discussed some of the unique impacts that face retail when using APIs to enhance content delivery.
Although you may not realize it on the surface, DevHub, the free site builder and hosting platform, is effectively a very sophisticated mashup using over 40 different external APIs. The Seattle-based startup, now with 10,000 site publishers who've built over 100,000 sites, have recently launched a major upgrade with new site editing tools, more content (API) partners, and new monetization tools. Their core offering takes data from APIs and other content sources as a way for niche publishers quickly create content-rich sites along with built-in monetization options:
Back in May 2011 Canadian YPG launched their developer ecosystem, which Programmableweb covered at the time, "to support and stimulate startup innovation in the local search and location based services market, including a certified developer program and four ways to monetize applications." Fast forward 20 months and the ecosystem now has 2,300 API-related partners, according to Mashery's Devon Biondi.
