Technology blogger Mohamed Marwen Meddah wrote an interesting post recently on his StartUpArabia site: "The Importance of Having An API for Arab Startups". Mohamed notes that, thus far, relatively few Arab online startups have opened up their platforms through APIs. However, he believes that providing an API is crucial for Arab online services.
Once upon a time there was the great debate over JSON vs XML. The past few years have seen JSONs popularity rise despite XML (and other formats) being well-established. Our own statistics on ProgrammableWeb show a significant increase in the number of JSON APIs over 2009/2010. During 2009 there were only 191 JSON APIs registered. So far in 2010 there are already 223.
Like Me Date Me is a new dating site built on top of the Facebook Graph API, which provides search-able access to user profile information. The service displays a photo and limited profile information of whichever gender you want to see. As the name of the site implies, users can "like" others, which can then lead to more interaction. The ratings approach, encouraging snap judgments, is similar to HotOrNot, which also added an option to meet the people you rate.
